Culture and tradition

In the 18th and 19th Century, Vienna was a city of musical life. Composers of the classical era were Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert, Anton Bruckner and Johann Strauss. Known composers of the 20th Century have included Gustav Mahler and Arnold Schoenberg. There are also a lot of famous conductors like Herbert von Karajan and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Currently there are many opera houses, theaters and orchestras in Austria. The New Year's concert and numerous festivals are traditional in Austria.

 

In 1900, Vienna was a center of Art Deco. Some of the most important painters include Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and after the Second World War Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

 

On a culinary level, the Viennese coffee house culture and the “Heurige” have a long tradition. But beer is also popular in Austria, there are 140 breweries. Typical dishes are the "Wiener Schnitzel, “Brathendl” and desserts like the Sachertorte, apple pie or “Kaiserschmarrn”.
